The flu is such a nasty thing! You feel awful and it also messes up your usual routine when you are out of commission for a while. So what are some easy ways to protect to yourself against the flu virus?
Here are my 9 suggestions to help protect yourself not only from the flu, but the secondary infections that sometimes develop as a consequence of the flu.
Wash your hands with ordinary soap and water frequently. By frequently, I mean every time you get a chance after touching public surfaces, handling trash, handling money.
2. Sinus Rinse
Rinse your sinuses thoroughly each day using a saline sinus rinse kit. I personally like the NeilMed® Nasal Rinse Kit. You can get a nasal rinse kit relatively inexpensively at most pharmacies.
3. Regular Sleep Schedule
Commit yourself to a regular sleep schedule that includes adequate hours (7-8 hours). For promoting relaxing sleep, I recommend spraying pure lavender oil in your sleep area and play calming, soothing meditative music. Also turn off the TV, computer, phone a few hours before you are ready for bed.
4. Avoid Stressors
Did you know that if you have a strong immune system, you are less likely to catch the flu? Therefore, it is key to avoid stressors on your immune system such as smoking which can damage your lungs and excessive alcohol intake.
5. Be Positive
Take a positive view on life - laugh a lot, enjoy your loved ones, friends and hug your pet. Brain study links negative emotions and lowered immunity. Your mood does affect your immune system!
6. Regular Exercise
Exercise regularly and pick activities that you enjoy, so that you are more likely to keep up the healthy habit. However, do not overdo it, too much stress on your body could negatively impact your immune function. Speak to your health professional to find out what is the optimum regime for you.
7. Eat Well
Eating a wide range of vegetables and drinking green tea are great for antioxidants. And for the chocolate lovers, you’ll be glad to know that, dark chocolate (70% cocoa) is a food relatively rich in polyphenols, which makes it a potent antioxidant. Avoid processed and fried foods.
8. Get Some Sun
Get out in the sun to soak up Vitamin D, the "Sunshine Vitamin", for a minimum of 15 minutes a day. The amount of time out depends on your skin type. But definitely don’t overdo it, sun burn isn’t fun!
