From all the reports on COVID-19, it appears that this extremely contagious virus is spread mainly from salivary droplets from person to person. These droplets can also lie on inanimate surfaces and remain infective if a person touches it and then introduces it into his body via mouth, nose or eye. It is not known how long it can remain infectious on surfaces but it is believed it can last longer in a cold environment than in a hot area.
On a more positive side, the fatality rate is not as high as SARS and MERS. It was originally estimated at 2%. Later, WHO quoted a fatality rate of 3.4%. The common flu is estimated at 0.1%.
Latest information indicates that fatality rates depend on the country. Determining factors include how fast the response to isolate infectious people to contain the virus spread, the facilities the country has, such as testing kits, trained staff, isolation wards, protective gear for their medical personnel, equipment such as respirators and ventilators.
The fatality rate in South Korea is expected to be at 0.5%, China outside of Hubei is at 0.9%. However, countries which are overwhelmed are expected to be between 3% to 5%. Singapore and Hong Kong who have learned lessons from SARS have been well prepared and have sufficient facilities.
Who is likely to require hospitalisation?
Statistics from China suggest 80% will have a mild infection, about 20% will require hospitalisation. 15% will be severe and 5% critical.

1.The elderly, above 65 years.
